CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The University of Illinois Marching Illini has been named the 3rd Place Winner in Metallica’s nationwide performance competition featuring “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Selected by members of Metallica, the Marching Illini’s performance stood out among outstanding collegiate ensembles from across the country.
In recognition of this achievement, the Marching Illini will receive $10,000 in prizing to support the continued excellence of the program.
In addition to this national distinction, the Marching Illini was also selected as the Overall Fan Favorite across all divisions, earning an additional $10,000 in prizing. This honor was determined by votes from fans nationwide, highlighting the powerful support of the Illini Family and music lovers across the country.
“This recognition is a testament to the talent, creativity, and relentless work ethic of our students,” said Barry L. Houser, Director of the Marching Illini. “To be selected by Metallica for 3rd place is a great honor but to be voted as the overall Fan Favorite by supporters across the country speaks volumes about the passion and pride behind this program. We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support.”
The combined $20,000 in prizing will directly benefit current and future members of the Marching Illini, enhancing the ensemble’s ability to provide world-class musical experiences while continuing a legacy that spans more than 157 years.
The Marching Illini extends its sincere appreciation to Metallica, to fans across the country who voted and supported, and to the entire Illinois community who helped amplify this performance on a national stage.
